CREATIVE WORK
"Walau"
The visualization of the “Walau” poem adopts the concept of poetry as performance, depicting an artist painting in their studio. While painting, the artist imagines creating with sand on the vast canvas of the sky or void. He climbs a dune, carrying sand in both hands, confident he can paint without conventional tools. Throwing sand into the air, he simulates painting on an invisible canvas. At times, he questions himself, wondering if this reflects humanity’s futile endeavors. As the journey unfolds, he discovers an answer: none of his creations can surpass the master piece of the Divine.
The notion of walau (although) symbolizes the contrastbetween human greatness and the Creator’s—“walau huruf habislahsudah, alifbataku belum sebatas Allah” (though my alphabet is exhausted, it has yet to reach Allah— The God Almighty). This belief defines Sutardji’s legacy, not only for his poetry but also for his existence, reflecting the summits he conquered as a poet. In Walau, Sutardji’sreligiosity dissolves contradictions in his creed, hinting at a return to the textual essence of Indonesian poetry, where depth of meaning takes precedence over his earlier mantra-driven works.
