"Saen Saep Sam Phan"

Khlong Sean Saep is the longest canal in Thailand with a rich history. Thais, Muslims and Chinese have long lived together along its banks, and it has served strategic purposes since the reign of King Rama III. As a significant historic canal, it should be preserved and maintained for posterity.

The Lettering Design draws inspiration from the Cultural Capital in Thai, Arabic and Chinese languages. Finding common ground, blend, integrate and fusion. This has achieved through analysis of the script’s letterforms, writing methods, stroke connections, structural compositions and writing tools. The result of

Composition Technique Elastic strapfrom lingerie are used as primary material due to their intimate to female body and their supportive function. The garment is constructed through hand weaving techniques inspired by the structure of traditional sticky rice container (kratip khao niao). Vertical elastic straps function as warp straps while horizontal straps are woven across to create rhythm and structure. Draping techniques are applied directly on the mannequin to achieve a precise feminine silhouette. the Lettering Design feature strong vertical strokes and flowing curves, with varied stroke weights – thick and thin – evoking nostalgia. Stroke terminals end with angled spur, resembling ink catches. Elegant flick terminals derived from the characteristics of the writing tools. Vowel ligatures are combined into a unified form.

The arrangement of letter come in non-lining (old-style), intended to convey the physical rhythm of the canal’s waves in motion and the tonal highs and lows of each language. Letters appear to move along with the waves and effectively convey emotion, full of life.

Responding to ethnic and linguistic differences, The Lettering design (Hybrid Letterforms) has reflected the distinct linguistic-cultural identities of the three ethnicities while harmonising them – creating an integrated expression that is suitable and appropriate for the Khlong Saen Saep community.
