CREATIVE WORK

"2 Become 1: Tokyo Edition"

2 Become 1, the bonding of two (or more) can become so strong that they practically become one entity, through the act of sexual intercourse. The creative work was inspired by Shunga, Japanese erotic art, which typically was executed as a kind of ukiyo-e (A genre of Japanese art that flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of subjects). The word “shunga” literally means spring picture, with “Spring” being a euphemism for sex. It was used to satisfy lustfulness, to stimulate sexual feelings or to masturbate, which could not be openly displayed because sex was not a disclosure matter.

Japan has a long history of textiles, with its traditional costume is kimono, which means “thing to wear”. Originally, kimonos were worn by commoners or as undergarments for the upper classes. From the 16th century, kimonos became a staple of all classes and both sexes. It remains an enduring symbol of traditional Japanese culture to this day.

The creative work features silhouettes of love making pose, combining circular fashion design concept with upcycling, pattern making and draping techniques to express conceptual thinking from inspiration. This resulted in 9 clothing items from second-hand kimonos, which can be mixed and matched in various looks. The clothing that was intentionally created for people who are gender-nonbinary and to disseminate guidelines for designing circular fashion products that integrate with diverse consumers, which can be further developed into future economies.
